Okay. Many reviews throw around terms like ‘essential’ and ‘compilationof the year’, but in this case they’re absolutely appropriate. Thiswill be an important release not just now, but in years to come. AnEngland Story is Soul Jazz’s attempt to chronicle 25 years of legendaryUK underground music. They’ve got their work cut out for them, but theypull it off admirably. You probably know Soul Jazz from theircult-status Percent Dynamite reggae compilations that brought a wholegeneration of kids up to speed on Jamaican history. An England Storygoes far beyond reggae though. Sure you’ve got your dancehall classicsby the likes of General Levy, Glamma Kid, Tubby T, Tenor Fly and TopCat. These artists alone are enough to make you foam at the mouth. Butthe Soul Jazz crew extend the search to drum n bass turning points (TC& Jakes) and make a seriously good stab at taking a snapshot of UKhip hop in the last two decades. Roots Manuva steps up, Blak Twang doeshis thing and the infamous London Posse show who started the whole damnthing. Run and buy this now.
