Buzzin’ Fly/Stomp EQ
Buzzin’ Fly is truly a label in motion. Since its launch in 2003, Ben Watt’s enviable roster of artists has diversified, adding new shades to the “replenishing music for the modern soul” mantra. What was primarily a deep house imprint now draws on dubby techno and nu-electro, from Berlin to Detroit. Buzzin’ Fly’s forward momentum has been well documented by the eponymous compilation series, and Volume 4 is another essential entry. When held up against the inaugural chapter, it’s somewhat incongruous: no Deep House 101 vocals, less cocktail-friendly inclusions, and more of an eye on the dancefloor – albeit a summery Sunday one. What has remained constant, however, is that persistent, reel-you-in groove. Watt has expertly handpicked ten label exclusives (and one lights-down club stayer in Abyss’s Mind Games) and strung them together in considered, cohesive fashion. His spoken word bookends add an easy familiarity, but the producer has really excelled himself on the smoothly jackin’ Just A Blip. The latter half is fine stuff, too - the synthetic melody and low-slung bassline of Mile Caro and Frank Garcia’s Lost pushing towards Jimpster’s tech-house take on Justin Martin’s The Sad Piano. Lush and unlikely to date, Buzzin’ Fly Volume 4 is as replenishing as ever.
