With urban music selling so well in the UK lately, it's only a matter of time before UK Hip Hop is dragged from the doldrums and sustains a commercial onslaught to retail. Step forward Mystro.
Aged 12 he started listening to hip hop artists such as NWA, Public Enemy and De La Soul to name but a few. As UK Hip Hop wasn't very popular in those days the young 'Stro' ventured into Ragga music. When this faded, he tried his hand at Jungle music to further his passion for being in front of a crowd and representing something the UK had to offer. It wasn't until he heard the likes of MCD and Blak Twang in 94/95 that he realised there was a hip hop scene in the UK with acts that used their own accents. Mystro had now found his spiritual home.
After performing at various open mic sessions across London and growing in reputation, the legendary Deal Real Records offered Mystro to press up his debut single: 'Kiss That Ass Goodnight' b/w 'The Words Out' featuring Skinnyman and Jargon. From this Mystro was given the opportunity to perform at various club nights across the UK, which only helped him grow in stature.
Shortly after Mystro was approached by Braintax, MC/Owner of Low Life Records and became part of his live show touring across Europe and slowly but surely getting his name known to a wider audience. 2004 saw the release of the Music Mystro EP to critical acclaim and from this he has toured and supported acts such as: KRS One, Jay Z, Nas, Skinnyman, Blak Twang, Scratch and The Platinum Pied Pipers.
Apart from hosting 'Kung Fu,' London's biggest Hip Hop night and winning the best host category for 2004/05 at The UK Hip Hop Awards, Mystro still tours regularly across Europe. He has also completed four successful solo tours of Australia working and touring with the likes of: Hilltop Hoods, Phrase, Bliss N Eso, P Money, Maya Jupiter and The Resin Dogs.
Now releasing his material in Australia through new Hip Hop label Grindin' the rest of 2006 promises to be a busy year with a new release in the mix CD series 'Tip Of the Mysberg' Volume 2 and an album project entitled 'Diggi Down Unda' which features all Australian talent. Add to this his debut LP 'Mystrogen' and a couple of other projects in the pipeline, there seems to be no rest for the one they call Mystro. Watch this space!
