Cloverfield

Paramount Home

4.5/5

First things first: there are two editions of Cloverfield on DVD (three if you include the metal tin edition). One, the copy your reviewer was given, features the film, and little else. The second features the film, the “supplemental files”, the making of Cloverfield, visual effects feature, further featurettes, deleted scenes, extended scenes, an alternative ending, director commentary and further commentary, Easter eggs, a date with Eva Green*, five minutes with God*... So, make sure you get the latter release. I’m going to pretend I was given the limited edition and shine praise all over it like the fan boy in me would if this had happened. If you have any interest in film, you’ll know the story of Cloverfield: an unknown monster attacks New York and a group of young twenty-somethings film their escape on handy cam. While it does lose a bit of its effect the second time round, watching the film on the small screen is an interesting experience – it feels even more real, because, let’s face it, if you had found this footage, you’d be watching it on your TV or computer, not in a theatre. This DVD is an essential buy, but make sure you grab one of the limited edition ones…

*not really.

Extras: director’s commentary, in-film supplemental files
