Noisy electro/indie duo Johnny Siera and Beau Velasco made the move to Baltimore a couple of years ago from their native Gold Coast, a relocation that’s seen their breakneck live sets feted by that city’s party scene. In the wake of two extremely hard to find EPs, Worldwide represents The Death Set’s debut album, and arrives amidst considerable hype. For the most part the duo’s distorted fusion of frenzied drum machines and Black Flag-esque guitar riffage is successfully distilled down into recorded form. By running in at a speedy 18 tracks in just 25 minutes however, there’s a sense of fragmentation that soon creeps in – while there’s certainly plenty of power-pop fuel to be found on highlights such as first single Negative Thinking, many of the tracks here unfortunately come across as filler more than anything else. A case of an act perhaps best caught live for the full effect.
