UK-based duo Padded Cell certainly have an impressive big-beat/breaks pedigree behind the both of them, Richard Sen having previously been one-half of Bronx Dogs alongside Regal, while partner Neil Higgins previously served time as a Dirty Beatnik. While they’ve been upping the anticipation with a slew of 12 Inches and remixes, Night Must Fall sees the duo crafting what they term ‘devil disco’; apparently equally inspired by both Liquid Liquid and Dario Argento favourites Goblin’s eerie synths. While the above combination certainly sounds promising, the end result often ends up being more akin to mid-period Death In Vegas given more of a punk-funk bass/brass twist. There are definitely some suitably gritty grooves to be enjoyed amongst Night Must Fall’s 12 tracks, but in this case, not all that much new in the way of ideas added to a vaguely DFA-esque template that’s getting pretty well worn these days.
