Anticon/Stomp
8/10
This third album from Hymie’s Basement/cLOUDEAD alumnus Jonathon ‘Yoni’ Wolf under his Why? alias, Alopecia certainly has high expectations surrounding it after its predecessor Elephant Eyelash won considerable critical plaudits during 2005. Perhaps inspired by recent touring alongside slo-core indie legends Yo La Tengo, Alopecia sees Wolf taking his downbeat fusion of jangling guitars, pianos, organs and live drums to even more melodically evocative levels, though the lurking influence of Anticon’s established alt-hop signature is never too far from the surface. There’s certainly a comparatively accessible pop approach evident not dissimilar to more recent Subtle outings, though Wolf’s predictably sharp lyrical muse hasn’t consequently diluted its edge – witness These Few Presidents’ verse hook of “even though I haven’t seen you in years / yours is a funeral I’d happily fly to”. Fans of Fog and Subtle’s recent For Hero For Fool album should be delighted.
