todd.jpgHighly rated Norwegian DJ and producer Todd Terje was the latest offering served up by the Future Classic label last Saturday night. The 26-year old continuing to impress music fans and critics alike with his unique musical repertoire spanning the spectrum of house, funk, disco and even a little techno.

This was Todd Terje’s first Australian sojourn, coming hot on the heels of a highly successful appearance at Austria’s Snowbombing Festival. With the burden of expectation weighing heavily, the night could have been scuppered early. However Terje seemed to slip seamlessly into top form right from the outset.

As soon as the man hit the decks we were treated to an eclectic showcase of innovative sounds and mixing. The Scando-disco sound was there in full cry, as the recently renovated Civic Underground played host to an orgy of disco (old and new), house, techno with some unexpected (but welcome) forays into more minimal territory as well. He of course also slipped in some of his re-edit craft, busting out a soon-to-be-released edit of a Canned Heat track right at peak time; winning over those with even the most acute musical senses.

Through his set, the Norwegian kept the crowd eating out of his hand serving up a funked-up salad of cleverly tweaked grooves and beats. And boy was it going down well. Classics Barely Breaking Even (Universal Robot Band) and Plastic (Simon Baker) made appearances. Adventurous listeners were also satisfied with scrumptious offerings in the early hours, with Terje stepping back up to the DJ booth around 4am for an encore set of headier tunes focusing in under the 100 bpm mark.

The newly decked out Civic Underground deserves a big thumbs-up as it complemented all the night’s acts superbly. The white-padded walls, flash lighting set-up and mirrored surroundings set the scene nicely whilst the upgraded Klipsh sound system produced super crisp audio, enabling patrons to fully revel in the night’s proceedings.

Overall the night was hugely enjoyable, further consolidating Todd Terje’s reputation. Full credit must go to the Future Classic team for putting on such an iconic underground act and doing it well. Till next time – disco ahoy.
