Japanese multi-instrumentalist duo Lullatone (aka Shawn Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida) have previously released four albums of delicate, artfully naïve downbeat pop/indie music, and their fifth effort, The Bedtime Beat, certainly provides a perfect nighttime setting befitting the duo’s moniker. By weaving together sparse yet melodic tunes constructed from such elements as primitive drum machines, glockenspiels and live drums, Lullatone craft a deliberately childlike spin on leftfield indie/post-rock that at points comes on like a kindergarten reincarnation of Múm or Stereolab. Beneath the playful exterior however, there are certainly some genuinely inspired moments lurking amongst the comparatively brief 20-minute running time, particularly opening track The Bathtime Beat’s slapped water ‘solo’, which is almost worth the price of entry here alone. Those with a taste for the more playful end of the indie pop/leftfield electronic spectrum will find much to enjoy here.
