Parisian duo Mlle (mademoiselle) Caro and Franck Garcia burst onto the scene a few years back with the melancholic Far Away on Damien Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels label. Far Away showcased a haunting struggle; its instrumentation, keyboard arrangements, beats and vocal all seemed engaged in a futile effort to meld – and it was this struggle that made it so evocative. It is in this tradition that the duo’s debut, released on Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly imprint, is crafted. Pain Disappears contains many memorable sententious melodies. Critics have pinpointed the single Always You – remixed by Ewan Pearson – and the Joy Division cover Dead Souls as highpoints, but it is on the more down-tempo tracks like Apologies or Hold Me that the pair really excel. Somehow with each track all the separate elements, from the distinct French accents of the vocals to the transcendental synths, amount to greater than the sum of their parts. Part Can, part Japan and part Booka Shade, this is a landmark release.
