8/10

From the first sound of vocals you’ll think you’re listening to The Vines. Lead vocalist Lloyd Stowe does sound uncannily alike Ivy League compatriot Craig Nicholls, but The Silents differ in damn good ways that count. They have less of the The Vines’ instant chorus-attack accessibility, and instead opt for a more abstract psychedelic garage style. So persevere with it (yes, people often say this to defend crap bands, but I’m not doing that here) and you will be rewarded with riffs buzzing around your head many days after. Standout tracks and deserved singles are still 23 and Nightcrawl, but you’ll get acquainted with newbies such as Little Girl Lost and Devils that have a distinctly different shade of trippy grunge and will shake your head around big time. Any garagers will be proud to call this Perth four-piece their own, and should look out for them touring the streets next month. I totally got spiders in my head, and once they’re in there, it’s very difficult to get them out.
