These guys are from Dunedin, NZ, the hometown of my mother and her family, so Die! Die! Die! get kudos for that. A few years back when interviewing the singer Andrew Wilson, he told me that whilst in my birthtown (Timaru), they played in a record store to a grand audience of one: a dude in a wheelchair and an arm missing. I suddenly had a lot of respect for my hometown. Well, for that one dude, anyway. Since then they’ve been joined by Brisbane prodigy/bassist Lachlan Anderson (French Horns, Scul Hazzards). So yeah, these guys are pretty rad in my book. Ditching Steve Albini for Shayne Carter (aka Dimmer) for production duties, this album isn’t as ear-piecing as their self-titled debut, but it’s still better than anything else you’ll hear right now. It’s actually therapeutic listening to such an original band in this day in age. If I were to pick a highlight it would be Death to the Last Romantic for its insistence on not changing a goddamn note through the entire song. Simple, sludgy, stunning, PLEASE make more music like this.
