After the recent surprise exit of long-time DJ partner Ivan Smagghe, this keenly anticipated debut album shows Arnaud Rebotini steering the Black Strobe ship into considerably rockier territory as a three-piece, complete with live drums and guitar. Fans of the Strobe’s preceding dark electro-disco 12”s have little to fear however, as there are plenty of sinister EBM-tinged dance-centred offerings on board here in the form of searing metallic opener Brenn Di Ega Kjerke and Blood Shut Eyes overdriven evil vocoder-assisted techno. Still, Rebotini always promised that Burn Your Own Church wasn’t ever going to be a completely dance-based album, and in the case of this extremely diverse and ambitious album, he’s definitely delivered in that respect. Elsewhere, downbeat keyboard-centred moments such as the Air-esque Girl Next Door and epic closer Crave For Speed show Rebotini letting his inner goth uncoil in a manner that calls to mind more the opulent sweep of Depeche Mode’s classic Violator period. It’s fair to say you could describe Burn… as being an electro-house album for biker bars or an expert lesson in Cold Wave-inspired cool. Either way, it just might be the record that finally brings the goths and dance heads together.
