Melbourne-based electronic producer Jim Moynihan (aka Spoonbill) unleashed one of 2005’s most head-turning local releases with his debut album Megafauna, which showed Moynihan fusing jazzy downbeat elements with uniquely Australian-focused samples including bird calls and bush talkback radio. Two years later this follow-up on his own Omelette label sees Moynihan adding an even greater level of confidence and depth to his productions, even as he’s cut down on the more obvious tinges of Australiana. There’s certainly more than a hint of both Amon Tobin and Kid Koala’s twisted sample antics in the eleven tracks collected here (not surprising, as they’re both artists Moynihan’s recently played alongside), though throughout, the sense of filmic atmosphere is undeniably Moynihan’s own. Like the best moments of the aforementioned producers though, there’s also a perceptibly dark undercurrent that occasionally rises to the fore in the form of brooding distorted bass synths that drags Nestegg well away from simply being comfortable chill-out listening, as the otherwise cosy-sounding title might suggest. Think DJ Soup’s mad-cap sampladelic antics being given an unpredictable jazz-electronic twist ala Ens or The Cinematic Orchestra, and you’re getting close to an apt description of what’s on offer here. Luscious.
