Luke Slater’s Fabric mix instalment represents a first for the series in that Slater actually recorded it in the chilly surrounds of the London club’s Room 2 last November in an attempt to capture the venue’s unique atmosphere. It’s slightly strange then that Fabric have relegated this latest chapter to their main stream of releases, rather than the parallel FabricLive set. Mind you, these sorts of quibbles disappear quickly into thin air once you’ve taken in Slater’s storming 22 track, 74 minute mix, which leans distinctly towards the more minimal side of techno and electro whilst also including a few surprises along the way. The inclusion of tracks from the likes of Sleeparchive, Audion and Tres Demented gives good indication as to the overriding flavour, and there’s also a wedge of tracks from Slater himself under such aliases as LB Dub Corp and Planetary Assault Systems, as well as a chance to check out offerings from his new Mote-Evolver label. The inclusion of Spank Rock as well as The Juan McLean succeed in injecting some unexpected curves, while it’s left to Basic Channel’s classic dub moment Phylyps Track II/II to clean things up. Pure class once again from Fabric.
